Graduate Diploma in Architecture and Spatial Practice

The Architecture & Spatial Practice Graduate Diploma at the RCA is a new programme, with its first intake in September 2027. The programme provides an immersive introduction to architecture and spatial disciplines for graduates from any educational background. Whether looking to change your career, or pivot from a different undergraduate specialism in the UK or internationally, this year-long programme provides access to further architectural study and training. In this programme, you develop new skills and ways of thinking through experimental, design-led studio practice, exploring drawing, model-making, material testing, photography, writing and digital media. Through critical enquiry, making and fieldwork, you investigate architecture in relation to social, political, environmental and technological contexts, while developing your own creative interests and spatial practice. The programme opens a pathway to transfer into the RCA’s Architecture MArch, or forge new creative directions in architecture and spatial practice.
Programme structure:
Design Workshop
Design Workshop develops core design skills through exploratory exercises and a range of representational and material practices, including drawing, model-making and material testing. You engage with architectural and cultural precedents in relation to contemporary practice, exploring architecture’s relationship to physical and socio-political contexts, aesthetics and form, technology and sustainability.
Project Proposal
Project Proposal develops your individual interests through self-directed research, contextual references and critical inquiry. Working within a shared brief, you develop your own frameworks and proposals, responding to site and context through programmatic, material and spatial innovation. You experiment with form, typology and fabrication while developing technical, environmental and theoretical knowledge.
Contextual Studies
Contextual Studies explores the cultural, technical, environmental, historical and professional contexts that shape contemporary spatial practice. You develop research, analytical and critical thinking skills while considering structures, sustainability, history and theory, professionalism and regulation, integrating social, environmental, cultural and technical considerations into your design practice.
Portfolio
Portfolio focuses on developing a curated body of work for future study or career goals. You refine earlier projects, using text and images to articulate your practical and theoretical concerns, respond to feedback and develop a selected project towards public output.

We welcome applications from candidates of all academic and professional backgrounds. All candidates must demonstrate creative interest and abilities. A strong artistic sensibility and demonstrable creative ability are essential for entry. All applicants must submit a portfolio or equivalent illustrated document that evidences visual and material exploration through, for example, drawing, photography, making, digital media, or spatial experimentation.

A strong submission will demonstrate both creative potential and intellectual curiosity through critical writing, research, or other substantial work. Applicants from non-design or art backgrounds should clearly show how they have translated their existing knowledge, skills, and analytical thinking into visual, spatial, or material forms.
