Master of Social Work (Advanced Standing)

Master of Social Work (MSW) students at SIUE experience unique learning opportunities by not only learning in a traditional classroom setting, but also learning through involvement in community-engaged scholarship and activities. MSW students regularly work with agencies and organizations, assisting with service provision, program development, and advocacy on behalf of individuals and families experiencing health and mental health concerns, homelessness, poverty and other social justice vulnerabilities. Program Format: Most courses are offered in face-to-face formats. Classes may be offered in an online or blendedhybrid format at the discretion of the course instructor. Most courses are offered in evening formats, but this is subject to change based on multiple scheduling variables. Graduates are able to lead efforts aimed at enhancing the lives of individuals, families and communities who may be under-served, at-risk or otherwise vulnerable. Students who have completed a BSW degree from a CSWE accredited program within the past seven years qualify for advanced standing status. Advanced standing students are only required to complete the Specialized Curriculum. This requires a one-year, full-time course of study in which students enroll in three consecutive semesters, including one summer term, for a total of 30 credit hours.

Applicants may be considered for admission in advanced standing provided the following criteria are met: The applicant holds a baccalaureate degree in social work from an institution accredited by the Council of Social Work Education, and the degree was awarded in the seven-year period preceding application for graduate study at SIUE. The applicant's GPA is 3.0 (A=4.0) or higher in undergraduate study and the applicant has completed all courses in the BSW foundation area with grades of C or better. Applicants with less than a 3.0 undergraduate GPA who completed all coursework in the baccalaureate foundation area with grades of C or better will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Advanced standing students entering with a BSW from an accredited undergraduate program must have completed an undergraduate research methods course with a grade of C or better. Students must complete any degree program deficiencies identified by the admissions committee prior to enrollment in specialized MSW courses. If the student is unable to satisfy deficiencies program acceptance may be rescinded.
