Address global challenges in environmental sustainability on this unique one-year MSc at UCL. Join us to explore complex environmental issues and technological systems through the lens of systems engineering and gain the expertise to advance your career in this rapidly-growing and critical field. As the global population grows and demands better living standards, the need for environmental systems engineers is clear. This Master's will equip you with the tools to succeed in a career that responds to human needs in a time of planetary environmental challenges. This comprehensive course takes you from the theoretical underpinnings of environmental engineering to hands-on project-based experience with an industrial client. Throughout the programme, you will pursue topics in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. You will cover a range of topics, including urban water systems, water resource management, green infrastructure, waste management, circular economy, energy systems, decarbonisation, hydraulics and hydrology, and public policy, and examine the complex interactions between people, technology, and the natural environment. You will learn about the decisions engineers need to make from a sustainable and environmental engineering point of view, enabling you to design holistic engineering solutions and technological systems that can help the world address climate change and move to net zero emissions. The programme emphasises transferable skills like problem-solving, management, diplomacy, systems thinking, collaboration, and contextual intelligence. This, coupled with your technical expertise, will make you highly sought after for a career in consulting, research, industry, or the public sector. This programme is ideal if you aspire to a high-level career in environmental and sustainable engineering. It is suitable for applicants with a first degree in environmental engineering or a similar field, who want to broaden their perspective and career opportunities through systems engineering approaches. We also welcome engineering and science graduates who intend to pivot their careers towards environmental and sustainability challenges. Finally, in alignment with the interdisciplinary character of the course, we consider applicants with other first degrees insofar they feature a sufficiently strong quantitative or environmental component. Commensurate work experience will be considered. This programme is also available on a modular (flexible) basis, with a duration of 5 calendar years.
