Genetics, Evolution and Environment MPhil/PhD

The Research Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment (GEE) is internationally recognised as a world leader in Evolutionary Biology, Human Genetics, Healthy Ageing, and Biodiversity research. From pioneering Britain’s first Zoology degree and establishing the world’s first institute dedicated to the scientific study of human genetics, to today’s cutting-edge advances in ecology and conservation, GEE has continually shaped our understanding of life’s diversity and complexity. The Research Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment (GEE) carries out world-class research in genetics, evolutionary biology and biodiversity, and promotes an integrative approach to understanding biological systems. We provide an enabling environment with excellent research facilities, analytical equipment and specialised laboratories. Our Genetics, Evolution and Environment PhD students usually have at least some previous background in one or more of these subjects: evolutionary biology, phylogenetics, geneticsgenomics, developmental biology, ecology, mathematics, statistics, computer science or biodiversity research. The programme offers essential transferable skills, preparing our postgraduate researchers to advance beyond their research degrees into prominent roles in academia, industry, and consultancy. It focuses on enhancing crucial skills for early-stage researchers and professionals, including effective communication, dissemination of research findings, and project management.

A minimum of an upper second-class UK Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate subject or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, or a recognised Master’s degree in an appropriate subject.
