Doctor of Philosophy in Hispanic Languages and Literatures

The Ph.D. program in Hispanic Languages and Literature at UCLA offers an exciting combination of research, writing, teaching, and public-facing humanities. The department supports a range of critical and theoretical approaches and encourages interdisciplinary work that takes advantage of UCLA's many strengths. In the Latin American-Iberian and Afro-Luso-Brazilian tracks, students take a variety of courses in literature, culture, film, and theory, balancing a broad understanding of the cultural field with their chosen specialization as they develop their research agendas. In Spanish and Portuguese Linguistics, students explore theoretical fieldsincluding phonetics, phonology, syntax, and historical linguisticsand engage in psycho- and socio-linguistic research.

Applicants with a bachelor's degree in a field other than Spanish, but who have substantial coursework and/or preparation in the field may also be considered for admission. One or more complementary courses may be recommended if the admissions committee determines that some area of preparation needs to be strengthened.

Applicants holding master's degrees in Spanish or Portuguese linguistics who wish to pursue the Ph.D. with specialization in Spanish, Spanish American or Luso-Brazilian literature must take the master's comprehensive examination in literature. Applicants holding master's degrees in Spanish, Spanish American or Luso-Brazilian literature who wish to pursue the Ph.D. in Spanish or Portuguese linguistics must take the master's comprehensive examination in linguistics.

IELTS Academic overall band score should be at least 7.0 is the minimum required.

TOEFL score on the paper and pencil test must be at least 560 or at least 87 on the internet-based test.
