The Biden School offers a combined 4 plus 1 Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Africana Studies and Master of Public Policy (MPP) program that allows students to complete both the BA and the MPP in a total of five years of full-time study. The program is open to Africana Studies students in the Law, Public Policy and Social Justice concentration only. All requirements of both degree programs must be satisfied and up to 15 credits of graduate coursework may be dual counted to satisfy requirements of both the BA degree and the MPP degree.Africana Studies is a multidisciplinary program with its basic content in the social sciences and humanities. The B.A. prepares a student to develop a complex and critical assessment of the social, political, intellectual and artistic dimensions of the African American and African Diasporic experience through comparative analyses of articles, books, film, art and archival material, to effectively communicate that knowledge orally and in written work and to apply their skills in projects that provide service to black communities in the region. This knowledge and these skills may be effectively incorporated into virtually any career path the student chooses.The AFRA Law, Public Policy, and Social Justice Concentration (BA) provides thorough understanding of public policy, law, and social justice both at local and national levels which also includes their interrelationships. Students who complete the Law, Public Policy, and Social Justice Concentration (BA) program will be able to: 1. Conduct research using Africana Studies methodology and research methods tools that present research that proposition educative and ameliorative policy and involve equity, participation, and human rights for African Americans, continental Africans, and diasporic Africans. 2. Analyze and understand law and policy that specifically affect African descended people in the United State, the African continent, andor the African diaspora and that offer corrective perspectives and resolutions. 3. Take a social justice approach to solving social issues that involve people of color and that displays initiative and agency for change through law, public policy, and social justice. 4. Analyze and interpret historical and contemporary social issues that affect Black communities as a means of altering past, present, and future harms. 5. Promote Black community engagement and take positions of leadership within Black communities.
