Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Resource Economics - Natural Resource Management

The major in Environmental and Resource Economics emphasizes theory, quantitative methods, and policy, providing a solid foundation in economics of the environment and natural resource policy. This major prepares the student to work in the fields of environmental economics and natural resource policy in the areas of consulting, government, teaching, extension, and research. The major offers two concentrations in Natural Resource Management and the Economics of Sustainability and Policy. The Natural Resource Management concentration emphasizes an understanding of the economic, physical, legal, and political problems of managing and protecting the environment and related natural resources in today’s world. It combines education in economics, and basic and applied biological and physical sciences with the fundamentals of public policy formulation. The Economics of Sustainability and Policy concentration is more focused on the policy side of environmental issues emphasizing economics and public policy. Both concentrations emphasize data analysis skills to be competitive in these fields.Demonstrate quantitative competency concerning the application of economic theory, including the use of technical and mathematical tools to solve analytical problems and answer environmental and natural resource economics questions at the core of current policy debates. Identify, gather and evaluate data using appropriate statistical methods (both paper-based and computer-based) to derive meaningful, evidence-based conclusions. Practice effective verbal and written communication skills and awareness of diverse audiences when discussing technical issues and quantitative outcomes. Critically evaluate theorized and empirical outcomes with an eye on welfare enhancing long-run economic viability that must be mindful of the impacts of natural resource development on other planetary systems. Discuss contemporary issues and apply best practices to demonstrate responsible and ethical professional conduct that respects diverse perspectives and promotes inclusivity. Practice awareness of the limitations of quantitative approaches and their potential consequences and relevance to others, particularly underrepresented groups.
