Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Teacher’s Certificate

The Mathematics Teacher’s Certificate Program (TCP) at UM-Flint is designed for future educators seeking Michigan teacher certification or a degree in Education without certification. The Bachelor of Science program prepares students to teach Mathematics at the middle and high school levels through a structured three-phase process.Phase I focuses on foundational coursework, requiring completion of an interview and application. Phase II involves selecting a primary grade band for certification (Grades 5-9 or 7-12), with optional secondary certification and mandatory field placements in local schools. Phase III includes extensive student teaching experience with a minimum of 420 hours in assigned schools. The program has strict academic policies, including dismissal for multiple unsatisfactory grades and limits on failing student teaching attempts. Academic advisors guide students throughout their studies to ensure successful completion of the program.

To earn a degree, students must complete at least 120 credits, though the exact number varies based on the chosen degree and concentration program. They must fulfill the General Education Program requirements, along with any additional degree and concentration-specific requirements. A minimum number of upper-division credits (300-level or above) is also necessary, with variations across academic units and programs, so students should refer to the specific requirements of their college or school—including the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education, the College of Health Sciences, the School of Nursing, the School of Management, or the College of Innovation and Technology—as well as their intended concentration program. Additionally, students must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.0, though some programs require a higher GPA for completion
