Doctor of Philosophy in Biochemistry - Cell Biology

Biochemistry is the study of the molecular events underlying biological processes. Consequently, it makes fundamental contributions to all disciplines concerned with living systems. The graduate program in Biochemistry enables students to conduct research in modern facilities, leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in a wide variety of areas including the relationship between structure and biological function in proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids as well as complex multi-component systems such as membranes and sub-cellular organelles.
Cell biology is the study of the structure and function of cells, fundamental units of life that become organized into tissues and organisms. While all cells carry out some common biochemical reactions, cells also become specialized to perform unique reactions and functions. How these different biochemical reactions are integrated during development and in response to different physiological stimuli and how they become disrupted in different diseases is a central focus of the Department. To dissect fundamental cell biological problems in health and disease, faculty in the Department apply state of the art approaches including functional genomics, proteomics, structural biology, high-resolution imaging and the development of new biosensors.

Applicants are generally required to have an MSc degree in biochemistry or in a closely related subject area with high academic standing.
