Master of Science in Anthropology

Anthropology is concerned with the unity and diversity of humanity (and related primates) and of human culture and society from a comparative and global perspective. For nearly 150 years, aspects of anthropology have been taught at University of Toronto. The Department of Anthropology was established in 1936 and has included many of the most prominent figures in Canadian anthropology. Members of the department conduct research on present and past human societies, cultural knowledge and practice, evolutionary antecedents, and closely related species. We offer graduate training in sociocultural, medical, biological, linguistic, and archaeological branches of the field. The Master of Science program extends over a two-year period and would normally be expected to be completed in the summer of the second year. Collaborative Specializations may take longer. The MSc program may also be taken on a part-time basis, however, part-time students are not eligible for Base Funding. This program may be appropriate for students who are considering careers in consulting archaeology, some aspects of medical or forensic anthropology, NGO work, or application to PhD programs in Anthropology at other universities.

Applicants to the MA and MSc programs are expected to hold an appropriate Bachelor’s degree, with a final year average of at least B+ or its equivalent from a recognized university. Normally, students must have at least five full-year Anthropology courses (or equivalent) with a minimum average of B+ to allow them to specialize in their proposed areas of study. However, the department also welcomes applications from students with competence in related fields, in line with our interest in innovative cross-field and cross-disciplinary work. Students who have done coursework in related fields which they would like the admissions committee to consider should attach a separate sheet as a last page to the research statement, listing these courses and explaining the relevance to the proposed program of study in anthropology.Research Proposal/Research StatementCurriculum Vitae or RésuméAcademic TranscriptsRecommendation letters
