Master of Arts in Indigenous Language Revitalization

Join a generation of language experts at the forefront of Indigenous language revitalization efforts. In this program, you'll be a language scholar with the expertise to lead in post-secondary institutions and communities. Learn how to support the revitalization, reclamation and maintenance of Indigenous languages.The MA program is thesis-based. We also offer a project-based MEd program. Both programs are delivered in a cohort model every 2 years.The program is delivered online combined with classes on the UVic campus in an intensive format. You’ll attend classes for approximately 3 weeks during the first summer, then several 5-8 day sessions throughout the year.The Master’s degree in Indigenous Language Revitalization (MILR) is the only one of its kind in Canada. It's offered jointly through UVic's Faculties of Humanities and Education.Graduates from our program are making an impact by: leading language revitalization efforts in Indigenous communities, andsupporting post-secondary programs in the revitalization, recovery and maintenance of Indigenous languages.

To apply to any of our graduate programs, you will need to submit:A Letter of Intent (maximum 2 pages) outlining a) why you chose to apply to the UVic Linguistics graduate program, b) how your background has prepared you for this program, and c) what area of study you hope to specialize in.Transcripts from the post-secondary institutions at which you have studiedTwo assessment reports (= letters of reference)Your most up-to-date curriculum vitae (resume)A writing sample: maximum 5 pages of a publication or major term paper (research-based if possible). Note: partial papers are acceptable, the idea is to give us a sense of your experience in Linguistics (and/or related fields), as well as of your writing style.Evidence of your language proficiency if you do not come from a designated English speaking country.
