What is political science?
As its name suggests, political science is the scientific study of politics to help us better understand political behaviour, governance and political discourse.
With a range of sub-disciplines such as political theory, international relations, history of politics and public policy, among others, you’ll learn to critically analyse politics and solve political challenges.

What is sociology?
Sociology revolves around various societal aspects including social behaviour, social change and social interaction, among others.
Through your sociology program, you’ll get to explore and evaluate the different characteristics that make society whole – from beliefs and values to norms.
Apart from that, you’ll learn to critically think about social topics and problems that happen in society as well as gain insights into why individuals make certain choices and how these choices shape their lives and the society they live in.

The future's looking bright for the political and social science field, with an expected steady 9% growth of employment opportunities for political scientists within the next decade.
With a growing demand for public policy analysts in the private sector and opportunities in government agencies to assess government policies and improve public service, there are plenty of opportunities for those who pick this career path.
Many international firms also hire political science graduates to analyse and offer advice when it comes to different policies across industries – from food policies for food chains to drug policies for pharmaceutical companies.
1. The study options and costs
Political Science
A political science bachelor’s program would typically take 4 years to complete, and you should expect to fork out around US$29,457 to study in the US.
This would qualify you for some entry-level positions after graduation.
However, if you wish to work as a political scientist, a master’s degree in political science is required. This would be more specific and also focus on research methodology. This would cost anywhere around £23,000 to £30,000 in the UK.
To advance your career and work in senior research positions or teach in universities, you can then consider pursuing a PhD.
Sociology
A bachelor’s degree in sociology takes around 3 years to complete and you’ll spend an average of US$27,488.
If you decide to take it further and pursue a master’s degree, expect to spend up to 2 years on it. A full-time master’s program would cost you around US$21,000 per year.
