‘Studying law in Australia has been transformative, personally and professionally’

More and more Canadian students are choosing to study abroad, some for the opportunities afforded by world-renowned institutions, others because a degree adds tremendous value to what they can do with their careers after returning to Canada.

We have been speaking to students who made this move, asking them why they did it, what sort of research was involved, and whether they have advice for other Canadians thinking of following in their footsteps. Our guest this time is Abi Sran, another Canadian student who chose to move Down Under and study law at Bond University on Australia’s Gold Coast.

Originally from Vancouver, Sran says she really values the skills and personal growth that come from studying internationally. “I appreciate how learning in a different country broadens your perspective and helps you see the world in new ways,” she adds.

Here’s what she had to say about her experience, the nicest thing about studying in Australia, and the unforeseen challenges she had to overcome.

As a Canadian student, what made you choose Bond University when you decided to study for your degree in law?

I decided to study in Australia because I wanted to step out of my comfort zone. I chose Bond University because I had heard excellent things about the university, the students, professors, and overall learning experience, and just wanted to try something different for myself. Having lived in Canada my whole life, I thought it would be valuable to experience a new environment and broaden my perspective.

What sort of research did you do before applying?

I had been interested in law since grade 9 because I enjoy problem-solving and critical thinking. I reached out to a contact at Bond University, who explained what studying there would be like. I was looking at studying in the UK too, and hadn’t realized Australia was an option, so this conversation prompted me to research further and ultimately make my decision.

I chose Australia because of the great weather (it’s warmer there) and because I knew a few people there. That said, I would recommend that anyone considering studying abroad do thorough research before committing.

Did you have access to any expert advice?

No, I didn’t. I wasn’t even aware that expert advice was available. Since I was already at university, I didn’t think to seek out additional resources. In hindsight, I realize there are so many resources for prospective students.

Were there challenges in moving from Canada to Australia that you hadn't foreseen?

Yes, living alone in a new continent was a significant adjustment. You’re in a completely new environment, and even small day-to-day things, like public transportation, take time to navigate. However, it became easier with practice. Australians are generally friendly and helpful, and I found that support was just a phone call away. Over time, I adapted, and the transition became much smoother.

What did you like best about Bond University?

Bond University is beautiful, spacious, and well-resourced. The professors are very friendly, and many have an open-door policy. The students are also wonderful. It felt welcoming, almost like a home away from home, and you’re able to build your own supportive community.

How do you think studying at Bond will help with your career goals in Canada?

I am back in Canada, and plan to become dual trained. Bond University offers resources tailored to Canadian students, including sessions on the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA). Even after graduation, support from Bond is readily available; they respond quickly to emails, which is invaluable. I plan to pursue my certification and license in Canada and apply the practical skills I gained at Bond. The knowledge I acquired there is something I use every day.

Could you tell us a little about what returning to Canada was like, after studying in Australia?

You change as a person, in a positive way. It’s the kind of transformation that occurs when you try anything new. The experience has been transformative, personally and professionally. I’m grateful to my family, friends, and Bond University for the support that made it possible.

What sort of impact has your program at Bond had on your professional life in Canada?

The impact has been significant. Networking and building connections are crucial, and while it can be intimidating at first, it’s highly rewarding. Bond’s program helps develop well-rounded, capable professionals, and the support available through the university ensures you’re never on your own.

Do you have any advice for other Canadian students who are thinking about studying in Australia?

If you’re considering it, I’d say go for it. Studying abroad is challenging but immensely rewarding. It encourages personal and professional growth and provides experiences that you can carry with you for life. Stepping out of your comfort zone changes you for the better, it’s a win-win situation.
