Step-by-step guide to studying overseas
With 50 years of experience and more than 450,000 successful student placements around the world, IDP knows what it takes to find the right match to set you on your course for success
Explore your options on courses, universities and their locations. Look into different teaching modules, research opportunities, scholarships being offered; campus life and employment prospects before you narrow down your selection. You can ask your friends, family or reach out to the universities alumni to get a wider perspective. Facebook or LinkedIn are also great social media platforms that reach out to these alumni effectively. However, when you do your research, do not forget to include your budget when you are weighing on your options.
Apart from other students’ reviews, it is always advisable to visit a reputable student placement agency website such as IDP Education. At IDP, you can be rest assured that we will provide quality services and guidance that will enable you to start your education journey abroad smoothly and seamlessly. Your education voyage starts with IDP Education Malaysia.
2. Speak with one of our IDP counsellors
When you are ready, make an appointment with our IDP counsellor. Our counsellors are professionally certified and many have been international students themselves. With friendly faces welcoming you as you step into any of the six IDP offices across Malaysia with their first-hand professional and personal experiences from different study locations all over the world, you can be rest assured that our counsellors will be there in every step of the way to guide you.
Bring along your wish list and course preferences when you come for an appointment with our IDP counsellor. During consultation, your counsellor will gather all your information and will match you with the right university that will enhance your educational experience abroad.
3. Make your application
After you have chosen your course and university, it is time to apply.
Your IDP counsellor will support your university and course applications. They will personally contact your chosen university or school to smoothen out the process and help improve your chances of acceptance. We take our job very seriously and follow the strictest legal and ethical standards.
Most universities or institutions require you to take an English test. Here at IDP, we are proud co-owner of IELTS, which is the International English Language Testing System. It is the world’s most popular high-stakes English language proficiency test for study, work and immigration. We conduct numerous tests and workshops all over Malaysia, so be assured when you apply for your courses overseas.
4. Offer acceptance (Congratulations!! You got an offer)
Once your application is received, the university or institution will assess it thoroughly and notify you of the result. It can take up to a few weeks (or longer for postgraduate levels) for your application to be processed.
If your application is successfully selected, you will receive a letter of offer and an acceptance form. Before you accept the offer, go through it thoroughly with your counsellor to check for any conditions that may apply.
If you are accepted for more than one course or school, your counsellor will help you decide on the best option for you.
5. Student visa
After accepting the letter of offer, the most important task is to apply for your student visa. Since each country has its own set of terms and conditions, your IDP counsellor will guide you through the visa application process and help prepare the documents needed for your submission.
6. Ready, set, go
Congratulations – you are off on a huge adventure. Before you board on the plane to your study destination, there will be many small yet important things you need to consider. At IDP, we will walk your through step-by-step in your dedicated destination ‘Pre-Departure Seminars.’ In these seminars, you will learn about matters such as currency rates, insurance, accommodation, banking, and the do’s and don’ts in a new country. You will also get to meet with the university alumni where they will share their own experiences and guide you on how to adapt to a new culture and country.
