The New Zealand Pathway Student Visa is a student visa that lets eligible international students study up to three consecutive courses under a single visa. 

Instead of applying for a new student visa every time you progress to your next qualification, you can complete your approved study pathway on one visa for up to five years, provided you continue to meet your visa conditions.

With a New Zealand Pathway Student Visa, you can:

• Study up to 3 consecutive courses on one visa.

• Stay in New Zealand for up to 5 years, depending on your study pathway.

• Study with one or more approved pathway education providers. 

• Start with an English language or foundation course before moving on to a higher qualification.

• Work part-time up to 25 hours a week while studying, if your visa allows.

• Work full-time during eligible scheduled holidays.

• Build a planned study pathway from your first course to your final qualification.

• Spend less time on visa applications and more time focusing on your studies.

Is a Pathway Student Visa right for you?

A Pathway Student Visa may suit you if you:

• Want to study English before university.

• Need a foundation programme before your degree.

• Plan to complete two or three courses in a set order.

• Want one visa for your full study pathway.

• Want to avoid applying for a new student visa after each course.

• Already have a clear long-term study plan.

• Want to move from one qualification to the next with less paperwork.

If you only plan to study one standalone course, another New Zealand student visa may be a better fit.

To apply for a Pathway Student Visa, you must meet Immigration New Zealand's visa requirements. You must also have a planned study pathway with approved education providers.

Have an approved study pathway

You must have a pathway offer that includes up to three consecutive courses. Your pathway must be offered by one or more approved pathway education providers.

Receive an offer of place

You must have an offer of place for every course in your study pathway in New Zealand. If you're studying with more than one provider, you'll also need a joint pathway letter confirming your planned study pathway.

Meet your course entry requirements

You must meet the academic and English language requirements for each course in your study pathway. Your education provider must also confirm that you're prepared to complete your studies successfully.

Show you can pay for your studies

You'll need to show that you can pay your tuition fees and living costs while studying in New Zealand. If someone is supporting you financially, you can provide evidence from an acceptable sponsor, guarantor or scholarship.

Meet the health and character requirements

You may need to provide a medical examination, a chest X-ray, or a police certificate.

Have medical and travel insurance

You must have appropriate medical and travel insurance for the entire length of your stay in New Zealand.

Be a genuine student

You must show that you're coming to New Zealand for a genuine study purpose and intend to follow the conditions of your visa. Immigration New Zealand will consider your study plans and supporting documents when assessing your application.

What does “genuine intention to study” mean?

You must show that you truly plan to study the courses listed on your visa and follow all visa conditions.

From 20 July 2026, Immigration New Zealand introduced several changes to make the Pathway Student Visa more flexible for international students.

How much does a Pathway Student Visa cost?

A New Zealand Pathway Student Visa costs from NZD $750. You may also need to pay for additional requirements, such as a medical examination, police certificates, certified document translations and visa photos.

Applying for a Pathway Student Visa starts with planning your study pathway. Once you have your course offers, you can prepare your documents and submit your application online through Immigration New Zealand.

1. Choose your study pathway. Apply to one or more approved pathway education providers.

2. Receive your course offers. Confirm your approved study pathway.

3. Prepare your documents. This may include your passport, offer of place, proof of funds, medical insurance and other supporting documents.

4. Submit your online application. Complete your application and pay the visa fee.

5. Wait for a decision. Immigration New Zealand processes 80% of applications within eight weeks. Apply around three months before your intended travel date.

6. Receive your eVisa. Once approved, you can prepare for your studies in New Zealand.

The exact documents may depend on your situation. Most applicants will need the following:

Identity

• A valid passport or identity document

• An acceptable visa photo

Study

• An offer of place from each pathway provider

• A joint pathway letter or pathway confirmation

Financial

• Proof that you can pay your tuition fees

• Proof that you can cover your living costs

• Proof of onward travel funds, where required

Health

• Medical or chest X-ray documents, if required

• Medical and travel insurance

Character

• Police certificates, if required

Supporting documents

• Certified English translations

• Sponsor or guarantor documents, if applicable

Yes. Many students can work while studying on a Pathway Student Visa.

You may be able to:

• Work up to 25 hours a week during your studies.

Your partner or dependent children may be able to apply for visas to join you in New Zealand if they meet Immigration New Zealand's requirements. They must apply for their own visas.

How long can I stay?

You can stay in New Zealand for up to five years, depending on your approved study pathway. Your visa will usually expire no more than three months after you complete your final course.

How long does it take to process?

Immigration New Zealand processes 80% of Pathway Student Visa applications within eight weeks. It's recommended that you apply around three months before your intended travel date.

Do I need a new visa when I move to university?

Not usually. If your university course is part of your approved study pathway, you can progress to it without applying for a new student visa.

What happens after I finish my pathway?

After completing your pathway, you may continue to further study, apply for a Post Study Work Visa if you're eligible, or explore other visa options based on your circumstances and future plans.
