Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education

The School of Education (SOE) Undergraduate Teacher Education licensure program prepares students for teaching positions in a variety of PK-12 public, charter, parochial and private school settings. The program blends theory and pedagogy with applied skills to ensure that students are equipped to maximize learning and achievement outcomes for PK-12 students. In each course students are exposed to relevant and rigorous curriculum that advances high leverage teaching practices and culturally responsive pedagogical practices.

Offered by the School of Education, the undergraduate program in Secondary Education is designed for students who wish to obtain teaching credentials in secondary education while completing their majors in the humanities, arts, natural and social sciences. The second major in Secondary Education offers a licensure specialization that meets certification requirements in the District of Columbia and establishes eligibility for certification in over 40 states. The secondary education major also offers a non-licensure specialization.

Applicants must have successful graduation of year 12 and completion of college preparatory curriculum with a Grade Point Average of 3.0

AU requires strong English language skills. All freshmen applicants (including U.S. citizens and U.S. Permanent Residents) can prove English proficiency by one of the following:

Internet based test (iBT) score of 85 or higher. Sub-scores for each section of the TOEFL must be 20 or higher. To be considered competitive, a 90 TOEFL iBT score or above is recommended, with each sub-score 20 or above.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System): Composite score of 6.5 or higher. Sub-scores for each section of the IELTS must be 6.0 or higher

Duolingo English Test score of 115 or higher. Each sub-score must be 105 or higher.

Pearson Test of English (PTE) score of 60 or higher
