Master of Arts in International Affairs - Development

The Development and Global Justice concentration is designed for students interested in pursuing professional careers or further academic research related to global poverty, inequality, and development. The concentration’s interdisciplinary curriculum challenges students to think critically and deeply about why some people and countries prosper while others remain marginalized. It focuses on the theoretical concepts and analytical tools that equip students to engage with the complex challenges of global poverty, inequality, and development.

The curriculum reflects a commitment to development as a process that is fundamentally about improving human well-being and securing greater social justice. The Development and Global Justice concentration has a particular strength in faculty research and teaching in human rights and the capabilities approach to development.

The Development and Global Justice concentration offers a flexible course of study, with elective courses on a wide range of topics offered in the Graduate Programs in International Affairs, as well as in the Milano School of Policy, Management, and Environment and in The New School for Social Research. Many students take advantage of opportunities for internships at one of the many New York-based organizations working at the forefront of development issues. International Field Program sites offer field-based research and practice.

Statement of Purpose- Include a thoughtful description of your background, tentative plan of study or area of inquiry in the field as you now envision it, faculty work and concentrations that interest you, your academic and/or professional goals, and an explanation of how this graduate program will help you realize those goals. Please also note any special language or computer skills that you have. Submit Two Letters of Recommendation Two letters of recommendation from professional and/or academic references are required. Recommendations must be submitted by recommenders directly via the online application portal. Instructions are included in the online application. Submit College Transcripts Applicants must upload an unofficial transcript, mark sheet, or academic record for each institution (even if you didn\u2019t receive a degree) in the Academic History section of the online application. All uploaded transcripts must be accompanied by a key, a legend, or the back copy of the transcript. Non-English transcripts must be accompanied by an English translation. Records from non-U.S. institutions must have grades or marks and contain a copy of diploma if the degree has been conferred. Make sure your name appears on the transcript/record. Scanned documents must be clear and legible. Minimum required scores are: TOEFL iBT- 92 IELTS - 7.0
