Why Pharmacy?
Pharmacy can lead to a career in a community pharmacy, a hospital, the pharmaceutical industry or research. Here are the main pathways to consider, depending on where you want to practise and what you want from your academic and professional life, plus a closer look at the integrated Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy at Monash University.
Why Pharmacy?
The world needs pharmacists. As experts on medicines and the way they interact with the body, pharmacists play a vital role in improving the health of their communities. Populations are growing and ageing, and medicines are becoming more complex, so the demand for skilled pharmacists continues to rise.
Many students are unsure where to begin, because the route into pharmacy depends on the country where you plan to practise. For international students studying in Australia, there are three main pathways.
Pathway 1: Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours)
Duration: 4 years
Who is it for? Students who want a direct route to a professional pharmacy qualification and who plan to practise outside Australia. If your home country does not require a master's degree to register as a pharmacist, the master's component of the integrated programme (Pathway 3) may be surplus to your needs, and the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) can be the better fit.
Before you choose, check the registration requirements in the country where you intend to work.

Pathway 2: Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science, then graduate-entry Pharmacy
Duration: 3 years for the bachelor's degree, followed by graduate-entry pharmacy
Who is it for? Students who want flexibility, or who are still deciding what they want to do in the pharmaceutical industry. A pharmaceutical science degree builds a broad science foundation and does not commit you to dispensing medicines. If drug formulation interests you, you can continue to Honours or a PhD and work in research or academia. You can also move into areas such as pharmaceutical sales, with on-the-job training or a graduate qualification in business.
If you later decide you want to become a registered pharmacist, you can apply for graduate-entry pharmacy. At Monash, graduate-entry students begin in the third year of the integrated Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy and can be eligible for registration after three years, including a paid internship. Graduate-entry places are competitive, and meeting the entry requirements does not guarantee an offer.
Pathway 3: Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) / Master of Pharmacy
Duration: 5 years
What is it? An integrated double-degree qualification that takes you from a bachelor's degree to a master's degree in one continuous programme. It is designed for the realities of modern healthcare, where pharmacists work in multidisciplinary teams and manage increasingly complex medicines. Students spend up to 110 days on placement across the course, and the programme includes the supervised training year needed on the way to registration.
Monash University is ranked second in the world for Pharmacy and Pharmacology in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, behind only Harvard University, and first in Australia. Every pharmacy degree in Australia offers a five-year pathway to registration. At Monash, you graduate with a master's degree as well as an honours bachelor's degree in that same time.
Who is it for?
International students who want to become a registered pharmacist in Australia.
Students who want to deepen their studies at master's level without adding extra years.
Students who are interested in an international experience. Students in the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) at Monash University Malaysia may have the opportunity to transfer to the Australian programme after their first or second year.
Who might find it less suitable? International students who plan to practise pharmacy outside Australia. If your home country does not require a master's degree for registration, the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) may suit you better.
Why should I do the Masters in Pharmacy?
Why do the Master of Pharmacy?
With an ageing population and increasingly complex medicines, pharmacists are taking on a larger role in patient care. This means working closely with doctors, oncologists, nutritionists, dietitians and other healthcare professionals.
Teamwork, strong communication skills and a deeper scientific knowledge are now essential for pharmacy graduates. A master's-level qualification prepares you to lead in this environment and supports a long and rewarding career.
Choosing the right pathway
The right pathway depends on three things: where you want to practise, how certain you are about becoming a pharmacist, and how much flexibility you want along the way.
Want to register as a pharmacist in Australia? Pathway 3 is the most direct route.
Plan to practise in your home country, where a master's is not required? Consider Pathway 1.
Still exploring careers across the pharmaceutical industry? Pathway 2 keeps your options open.
