Admission Requirements for Canadian & International Students

Canadian students typically need provincial secondary school diplomas or a university degree with a competitive GPA. For undergraduates, admission requirements may vary for Canadian students but generally involve a strong average in Grade 12 courses. Students in Ontario, for example, may need an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with an average of 80% in six Grade 12 U/M courses. Students from British Columbia may need a Senior Secondary Graduation Diploma with at least five Bs in acceptable Grade 12 courses. Here are the admission requirements to study in business and management studies if you are a Canadian or international student.

Academic prerequisites

These will vary depending on the program and the school, but according to the University and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) in the UK, generally students interested in studying an undergraduate degree at business schools in the UK should have the following courses:

  • Maths. This can include algebra, statistics, calculus, and finance

  • English. Up to Grade 12 English (or final year of high school).

Minimum grade requirements will differ depending on the school and program.

For a postgraduate business degree, your specific academic prerequisites will differ depending on the program, but generally you will need:

  • An honours undergraduate degree in a relevant program

  • Completed relevant coursework as stated by your program page such as statistics, mathematics, computer science, etc.

  • Work experience (as necessary, i.e. 3 years of work experience for an MBA)

English test requirements (IELTS/TOEFL)

Always consult your business school of choice for their specific English test requirements, as they can differ according to overall score and expected scores within each section.

  • IELTS score - At least overall of 5.5, depends on program

  • TOEFL score: 72 to 100+, depending on the school

GMAT

Not all business schools require the GMAT. If they do, the minimum score requirement may be posted on their admission website, but more often this isn’t publicly available. Instead, you’ll find information about the average GMAT score for that year. In general, you should aim for a GMAT score of 650 or higher to be competitive in the top 20 or top 10 business schools.

How to Apply to a UK Business School

1. Choose your top programs and universities based on eligibility and career goals

Based on your grades, prerequisites, and test scores, select your top programs and universities. If you are applying for an undergraduate degree and do not meet all the eligibility requirements required, please note that some programs provide a foundation year, such as at the University of Reading. If you are applying to a postgraduate degree, consider your ideal career trajectory and compare this with the individual strengths of each program, such as degree offerings specializing in AI or Sustainability.

2. Prepare your documents

What may be required in your application will depend on your level of study and your school. However, be sure to prepare any necessary documents that can include:

  • Transcripts. Using your online student portal, order a copy of your transcripts and select your preferred delivery method (digital or print).

  • Personal statements. Articulate your personal career goals, why you want to study in this program, your skills and strengths, as well as relevant experiences and how this degree will help you make a positive impact in the field.

  • Letters of recommendation. Request these from teachers and mentors at least two months in advance of your application deadline. Provide information about selection criteria for the program where possible to support the writing of these letters.

  • English test results. Be sure you meet the language test result requirements as noted by your program and degree. If you don’t meet the minimum scores, you will need to retake your test.

  • GMAT scores. Where applicable, you will be required to take the GMAT and include your scores in your application. A good score will fall between the 625-665 range.

Please note that this is not an exhaustive list and that it’s in your best interest to always check your specific program page. If you have any questions, book a free consultation with one of IDP Canada’s expert education counsellors. Be sure to consider your program’s mission statement and any information included on ideal applicants as well as selection criteria and incorporate this information into any relevant documents like your personal statement. Put aside ample time to edit and check your application for errors.

3. Apply via UCAS or directly to university

Depending on your program, you may have to apply directly via the UK’s Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) or through your university’s application page. Generally, you will need to apply in January in order to qualify for the beginning of term in September/October. Be sure to differentiate which application route you’ll need to take and ensure you have the right login credentials and account set-up far in advance, so you’re not scrambling at the last minute.

4. Attend your interview, if required

Some degree programs will require interviews as part of the application process, and this is especially true for postgraduate programs in the UK including MBAs. To prepare, thoroughly understand your program, school, their ideal student profile and selection criteria, as well as your experience, leadership and teamwork skills, and work experience (where relevant). Be sure to use evidence to substantiate any claims and quantify results with data where possible.

5. Accept offer and apply for your visa

Congratulations! You’ve received your offer of acceptance. Now it’s time to finalize the finer details, which includes applying for your visa, setting up a bank account in the UK, finding accommodation, and securing additional funding.

Cost of Studying Business in the UK for International Students and Canadians

Your cost of study in the UK will be based not just on the location and university, but on the program you choose. According to the British Council, international tuition fees for undergraduates can be between £11,400 and £38,000. These courses typically last for three years in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, or four in Scotland. For postgraduates, tuition fees for international and Canadian students can vary from £9,000 - £30,000. Many of these degree courses can be completed in one year of full-time study.

As for studying business in the UK, on average, MBA tuition fees for international students will cost between CAD $24,300 and $215,500. This depends entirely upon your program and institution. For example, the London School of Business MBA has a tuition fee equivalent to CAD $224,800. You should always consult your school of choice about their specific costs for that year. It also helps to check with an education counsellor before making any decision.

International students should always set aside funds for supplementary costs that include health insurance, study-related costs, and emergencies.
