How to Apply for a Scholarship in the UK as a Canadian
Receive program admission and create scholarship shortlist
Depending on the type of funding, you will often require proof of a secured place in the program or acceptance to the program. Once you receive admission, create your list of scholarships that you are eligible for. You will need to check eligibility criteria such as minimum grades, English language requirements, leadership experience and extracurriculars, and work experience. It’s recommended you stack university awards with external and provincial funding to widen your support. However, as mentioned, keep in mind that several university-specific scholarships do not allow applicants who are already receiving funding from the government, organizations, or third parties.
Familiarize yourself with selection criteria and prepare relevant materials
Your award will typically include selection criteria and information on how to stand out as an applicant. Review this information and make sure all aspects of your package, including your statement of purpose, CV, and references, are aligned to these criteria. Where possible, customize and align each individual application to the scholarship you are applying for, rather than using the same one for many. While this takes time, it is more likely you’ll stand out from other applicants and be successful.
For added support and expertise, reach out to IDP Education Canada’s student counsellors, who offer guidance on scholarship applications. Book a free call now.Submit your scholarship application
Take ample time to prepare in advance for your application submission, which includes reviewing all guidelines and criteria and double-checking you’ve adhered to them as well as reviewing all written material for mistakes in grammar, clarity, spelling, and more. Avoid applying last minute as this is when you’re more likely to make mistakes you may miss that can compromise your application and future funding.
Complete your interview and provide proof of funds (where applicable)
Some scholarships for Canadian students to study abroad may require interviews if the finalists are extremely similar in academics. This is typically the case with program-specific and merit-based scholarships. If you’ve applied for a needs-based scholarship, you may be asked to provide proof of financial need, which can vary in valid documentation. Always check the scholarship page for more information on what you can expect in terms of requirements and all rounds of evaluation.

Top Tips to Increase Your Chances of Getting a UK Scholarship
Ready to apply for funding? Here are our top tips to help you secure a scholarship for your studies in the UK.
Research widely
Use tools such as IDP Canada's Find a Scholarship tool to cast a wide net and familiarize yourself with all funding opportunities you may be eligible for. Include government funding opportunities from Canada and the UK, provincial loans as well as third party awards from organizations or NGOs. As long as applying for or receiving one award doesn’t invalidate your application for another, submitting applications for multiple streams of funding increases your chances of gaining financial support and lessens the load of your international student fees.Review eligibility requirements
You never want to be in a situation where you’ve prepared your application and perfected it to the selection criteria but missed one key part: that your country of residence makes you ineligible for funding. This is why it’s important to thoroughly review eligibility requirements. Consider creating a spreadsheet to help keep you organized, so you know you’re not missing anything important. This can also help you prioritize which scholarships you should apply to first based on selection criteria, funding amount, and timelines.
Find out about all deadlines
Depending on the type of funding, there may be multiple deadlines and requirements you must be aware of. This extends beyond your application deadline and can include fee deposit deadlines and other necessary steps if you are awarded funding. Be sure you understand all key details and set deadlines in advance so you’re not rushing at the last minute. This minimizes errors.
Be as genuine as possible
Evaluation committees see thousands of applications, and it’s important to take the time to tailor, sculpt, and refine your application to help you stand out. Remember, it’s better to submit a smaller number of strong applications than a larger volume of rushed applications that are similar. Use your statement of purpose or required written responses to questions in your application to show what makes you unique and why you have a genuine drive for a degree or program. When you are aligning your answers to your values, morals, and experiences, it shows who you are as an individual and how your studies are supporting your goals which include who you want to be and the impact you want to have in the world.Reach out for expert help or advice
