Introduction
“Hands-on learning ka talaga doon,” says Ann Azada, Market Specialist for Loyalist College, in a recent episode of IDP Philippines’ Campus Conversations, a podcast session hosted by Emily Santos, Office Destination Manager for Canada and the US.
Located in Belleville, Ontario, Loyalist College sets itself apart from city-based schools by offering an immersive and skills-focused learning experience that can give students a competitive edge upon graduation.
But the college offers more than just academic opportunities. In the same conversation, Ann highlighted the affordable accommodation, work opportunities, and laidback lifestyle not just within the campus but also outside.
Loyalist Living: Affordable and High-Quality
In describing Belleville’s open-space environment, Ann compared the city to Laguna’s Nuvali, known for successfully combining urban infrastructure with the natural environment. This balance is also evident in Belleville, where students can enjoy both peaceful surroundings and affordable living costs.
Because Loyalist College is located outside major urban centers, students can expect a lower cost of living. Shared accommodation inside the campus, for example, costs only 450 CAD (18,598 PHP), Ann said. In comparison, shared rooms in Toronto can cost between 750 CAD and 1,500 CAD (31,000 PHP – 62,000 PHP), according to Rentals.CA, a trusted rental listing website in Canada.
Groceries in the area can cost only about 200 to 300 CAD (8,200 to 12,400 PHP), Ann mentioned, while also highlighting the low cost of transportation within the city. “May bus pass din tayo for 65 CAD (2,700PHP) [monthly], pero unlimited naman siya,” she added.
Your bus pass covers not just travel to and from campus but also transportation throughout the city of Belleville. This allows you to commute, shop, and explore the area without needing a car.
Beyond its perfect location, Loyalist College prioritizes student well-being and hands-on learning, which they extend to employment support. For many international students, work is a necessity for earning income, gaining experience, and building social networks.

Loyalist Works: Career Growth and Support
There are different work opportunities available for students like you, provided that you meet the necessary criteria.
Each year, Loyalist College creates over 200 on-campus jobs. So, if you’re looking for part-time employment, Loyalist WORKS On-Campus Employment Initiative allows you to apply for available positions in the Student Centre, Library, Admissions Office, and other departments that need manpower. However, you can only apply for this if you qualify under their financial need guidelines.
For full-time employment, you can seek and apply for any position, as long as you meet the required credentials. With the help of Loyalist’s Career Services, you can get support in finding employment during your studies—whether it’s part-time, full-time, or summer work off-campus—and even once you graduate.
More importantly, Loyalist College ensures that future work opportunities are aligned with your chosen program as a student, Ann said. “Yung programs namin are very aligned sa shortage right now sa Canada,” she added, also sharing that the college offers up to 70 full-time programs for international and local students.
The programs offered at Loyalist College are eligible for a post-graduate work permit (PGWP). This means that after you graduate, you will be allowed to stay in Canada for a certain period to gain work experience. Loyalist’s PGWP-ready programs are specifically aligned with Canada's labor market, enabling students to secure employment right after graduation.
Loyalist Experience: Real Skills in Action
The institution focuses on real-world experience by offering state-of-the-art facilities, including training centers where you can gain real knowledge in the industry you’re aiming for.
Ann highlighted that the automotive training facility in the college is similar to real-world auto repair shops. “Talagang may makina ‘yan para maintidihan mo. Hindi pwede ‘yung puro computer-based ka lang or model-scale ka lang … You have to experience it!” said Ann.
This doesn’t stop at automotive programs. If you’re pursuing a healthcare program, you’ll get first-hand experience working in a realistic environment using lifelike materials with functioning organs and simulations of patient care scenarios. These simulations closely mimic the real world, allowing you to practice as if you’re already on the job, Ann shared.
If you’re interested in the welding program, you can use high-quality equipment in the training facility where men and women can work side by side. Rather than conforming to the old stereotypes, Loyalist College is taking steps to challenge the notion that only men can work in skilled trades by building a more inclusive and diverse community in the program.
These facilities at Loyalist College serve as evidence of their commitment to provide quality education through hands-on training. Once you graduate, you already possess the skills and experience that employers look for.

Loyalist Lifestyle: More Than Just Academics
The campus is designed to offer you a well-rounded student life as it is equipped with spaces where you can relax, socialize, and de-stress. The on-campus amenities, according to Ann, offer students a wide variety of activities to do and pursue during their free time.
For example, the campus grounds have a student-run restaurant where you can experience training in a fine dining restaurant, which is beneficial if you’re a culinary student. But if you wish to just relax (without worrying about your studies), you can visit the spa or the pub to connect with fellow students or unwind after a busy week.
Of course, there’s also a space for the sports-minded. Whether you’re into basketball or football, the college includes an inner and outer basketball court, soccer and football fields, and even a gym.
Aside from that, there is also a library, which is perfect if you want to read or just find a quiet space for your studies. Loyalist’s Parrott Centre Library is surrounded by nature, offering a peaceful space where you can explore a wide collection of books and academic resources, Ann shared.
And when it’s time for a break, the campus food court offers a variety of meals and snacks to keep you focused and energized. Their menu is filled with dishes that are not just delicious but also nutritious to help foster students’ well-being.
All in all, Loyalist provides you with a student-centered environment. So, regardless if you are looking for a place to study, meet new friends, or start a hobby, you can find a space where you can really thrive.
