Introduction

International students choose New Zealand for its high-quality education, stunning landscapes, and multicultural environment, but before you can experience any of them, you need to secure a student visa.

Despite New Zealand’s welcoming attitude toward international students, applicants still face rejection due to its complex application process.

So, if you’re planning to study in New Zealand, it’s crucial to understand why student visa applications get rejected. Learn how to avoid the common mistakes applicants make, like the five listed on this blog:

Mistake #1: Noncompliance With Visa Guidelines

Failing to comply with visa policies—such as selecting the incorrect visa type or failing to pay the correct fee—is a critical mistake that can result in a rejected application. That’s why it's essential to stay informed about the changes to the immigration policies, especially if you’re planning to study in New Zealand.

Here are the recent updates on NZ’s visa guidelines:

Costs

In October 2024, fees associated with student visa applications for New Zealand increased.

  • Student visa: Increased from NZ$375 to NZ$750

  • Post-study work visa: Increased from NZ$700 to NZ$1,670

For Filipino international students, the student visa fees now cost NZ$850, which covers:

Those applying for a pathway student visa are only required to pay NZ$750 if they plan to come to New Zealand for less than 2 months.

These cost changes can affect your allotted budget, so it’s wiser to plan your study abroad journey months ahead of your intended departure.

Application System

This new application form will be used for the following student visa types:

  • Exchange Student Visa

  • Fee-Paying Student Visa

  • Foreign Government Supported Student Visa

IDP Tip: Whether you are doing it alone or with someone’s help, always visit the latest official guidelines of New Zealand before submitting your student visa application to avoid delays.

Mistake #2: Wrong Information

Inconsistencies can get the attention of immigration officers. Having gaps in your documents without a supporting explanation can make you appear suspicious and

Common Areas of Inconsistency

  • Personal details (name, date of birth, passport number)

  • Educational history

  • Financial history

  • Police history

  • Interview responses

  • Intent to return

IDP Tip: If gaps are present in your application, explain them clearly in your Statement of Purpose (SOP) or provide supporting documents.

Mistake #3: Missing Documents

Many applicants also fail to secure a student visa simply because essential documents are not properly presented. Student visa applications are a tedious process, so missing documents like birth certificates or academic transcripts is common. The bad news is that they can lead to more delays!

List of Usual Requirements

  • Evidence of a place offer from a New Zealand education provider

  • Financial documents (bank statements, sponsorship letters, etc.)

  • Medical and character certificates

  • Proof of tuition payments

  • Clear statement of purpose

  • Valid passport

IDP Tip: Keep all your documents in a single envelope, and create a checklist of the necessary documents you need. Ensure they are organized by type of document for easier navigation.

Mistake #4: Lack of Financial Proof

Another mistake when applying for a student visa is being vague about your finances. In New Zealand’s student visa requirements, you must show proof that you can provide at least NZ$20,000 per year for your living expenses, separate from your tuition fees.

Aside from this, New Zealand immigration also checks:

  • Holding duration of funds in the account

  • Source of funds (e.g., business, savings, education loans, etc.)

  • Evidence of a financial guarantor or sponsor, if applicable

IDP Tip: Record and compile financial statements showing three to six months of transaction history. Showing a consistent and clear source of funds can strengthen your visa application.

Mistake #5: Failure To Meet Deadlines

In New Zealand, student visa processing can take one to four weeks, depending on the education provider. To be fully prepared, it’s recommended to sort your application at least three months before your intended travel date.

However, if your program lasts less than three months, you don’t need to get a student visa and will still be eligible to enter New Zealand.

IDP Tip: Work with your IDP counselor and begin your research months in advance to give yourself ample time to verify all required information stress-free.
