Introduction
Going to the UK to study may seem like a far-fetched idea, especially if you factor in financial constraints. It is indeed a costly dream, but the good news is you can put these financial worries aside and begin planning your first steps toward studying in the UK in 2027, thanks to the UK’s return to Erasmus+.
What is Erasmus+
Erasmus+ is the European Union (EU)’s flagship program for education, training, youth, and sport. It provides funding for study, teaching, training, volunteering, and work placements across eligible countries and essentially promotes inclusion, equal opportunities, and cross‑cultural exchange for participants of all ages.
In 2027, the UK will rejoin Erasmus+, following a new agreement with the EU that restores access to study, training, and exchange opportunities for UK participants. This marks the UK’s return after leaving the program post‑Brexit in 2021. This means that starting in 2027, students, apprentices, youth workers, and adult learners in the UK will once again be able to benefit from funded mobility opportunities across Europe.
Erasmus+ is designed to be inclusive. The program welcomes participants from diverse backgrounds and offers targeted support for those with fewer opportunities, including people with disabilities, individuals with financial limitations, and learners from underrepresented groups. Grants help cover living costs, and UK students will not pay additional tuition fees when studying abroad under the scheme.
The UK’s participation in the program will be managed by a UK National Agency. This ensures that institutions and learners can access mobility opportunities with particular attention to those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

What this means for Filipino students
Filipino students often face financial challenges when planning to study abroad, especially in countries like the UK, where study and living costs are comparatively high. Exchange rates can make these expenses feel even heavier when converted from Philippine pesos.
However, with Erasmus+ offering structured grants for international study, these worries can be eased. The program has long provided Filipino scholars with funding opportunities to pursue master’s and doctoral studies in the UK (and other EU member states). The program is inclusive, welcoming participants from diverse backgrounds—whether you’re a student, researcher, trainee, youth worker, or sports staff—depending on the specific Erasmus+ action.
For Filipino applicants, access to the program will depend if your school is an Erasmus+ partner. The process of application usually includes registering for the program call, checking whether your profile and project meet the relevant criteria, and submitting documents through the designated online portal. If this feels too overwhelming for you, worry not, because your IDP counselor will help you!
