While it can be very exciting to be on your study adventure abroad, there could be circumstances when the unexpected happens – from encountering a robbery to having a mental health breakdown.
Hence, it helps to be ready rather than caught off-guard.
A great way to ensure you’re prepared is by having useful hotlines and emergency numbers in Ireland as you never know when you might need them! After all, you’d want to gain the correct help, attention and assistance according to your situation and needs.
If you aren’t sure where to begin looking for these numbers, fret not! Our guide covers several different unexpected scenarios to be prepared for as well as key emergency contacts for the fire department, police and more.
It could be alarming to get mugged, especially when you’re caught off guard. Unfortunately, this is something that could happen although you try to be extra careful while you’re out and about.
If this happens, report the crime straightaway to your local Garda station by calling 112 or 999. You’ll be required to provide your name, contact details, address and a description of the stolen property as well as details of any damage caused.
After which, a case number will be assigned to you and a Garda will investigate the incident, even visiting the scene for further details if necessary.
In the event of a fire emergency, be it witnessing one or directly encountering it, call 112 or 999 for fire services.
This 24-hour hotline can link you up with fire services, which are staffed by firefighters that can respond to fire emergencies, accidents or any incident where lives or property are in danger.
While it can be a rather anxiety-inducing situation, panicking will not do you any favours. The first thing to do is try to activate a fire alarm pull station (if there’s one) and evacuate the building or area as soon as you can without using the elevator. After which, call for fire services.
In Ireland, it pays to have the AA Roadside Rescue Membership especially if you’re in need of roadside assistance.
Regardless of whether it is your car that has broken down or if you’re a driver or passenger in someone else’s car which has broken down, this membership covers you for assistance and roadside rescue.
As the country’s biggest breakdown assistance company, AA offers nationwide cover 24/7, all year round.
If you’re faced with a roadside emergency, get your vehicle out of oncoming traffic as best as you can before making the call to get help. In the event your car is unable to get fixed by the roadside, it will get towed to a garage of your choice or you can opt for a replacement car or alternative transport as needed.
When faced with a medical emergency when someone is injured, seriously ill or at risk of dying, call 112 or 999 and ask for an ambulance.
It may be a frightening situation to be in, but doing your best to remain calm and focused could do wonders. After making the call for an ambulance, it helps to assess the situation in case basic first aid or CPR is required.
If you’re unable to perform basic first aid or CPR, it helps to try and shout for help or approach someone who does while waiting for the ambulance to arrive.
Whether it’s intense homesickness from being away for a long time or high levels of stress from busy periods in school, there may be times on your trip when you feel overwhelmed.
Ideally, you would have a good support system – either in the form of close friends or family – to lean on. However, this may not be the case and it could be challenging if you struggle to open up to them or choose to keep it to yourself.
This is when mental health hotlines come in handy. From depression support to women’s aid, there’s suitable support according to your individual needs.
On top of being able to keep things confidential, these hotlines offer a safe space and non-judgemental support for callers.
Depending on the kind of health advice you need, whether related to COVID-19 or general health questions, your go-to solution would be HSE, be it via their Twitter, email or hotline at 1800 700 700 or 01 240 8787.
The HSE’s contact centre is open 7 days a week, with the quickest response time between 1 to 6 pm.
Do note that if you’re facing an emergency, it would be better to call 112 or 999 for help.
