Master of Fine Arts in Filmmaking

The MFA in Filmmaking prepares the next generation filmmaker to enter a field that is expanding beyond Los Angeles and New York and to sustain a practice through participation in the international film community.

Cinema is a global artform. It is high art. It is populist. It livens the heart and can dysregulate the intellect. It enrages. It excites. We cry, laugh, scream and might even decide to make a change. Cinema is the perfect entry into a conversation with a stranger - what is your favorite film It is how we create shared myths that bind us throughout the world. We are in a period where corporate media can dominate the world while at the same time filmmakers with mobile phones and a computer can create a film that has a sweeping impact.

Through a hands-on curriculum and unique collaborations with The Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Film and Media Studies program and the Maryland Film Festival, the M.F.A. in Filmmaking prepares students for sustainable careers in film and media as the industry continues to realign.

Students must have a high school diploma, 3-year undergraduate degree, or master\u2019s degree at an accredited institution.

Applicants may choose one option from among the following to demonstrate English language proficiency: TOEFL Test: A minimum overall band score of 75 on the IBT Test of English Language as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required. IELTS Test: A minimum score of 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required. Duolingo Tests: A minimum score of 100 is required to be considered for full admission.

Application Deadlines: For Round 1 - January 19 and for Round 2 - March 19. Some programs may continue accepting applications after March 19 on a rolling basis, should space remain available.
