Studying in Australia offers you the opportunity to experience an advanced education system, diverse cultures, and have the opportunity to work at multinational companies and corporations. However, what does it take to study in Australia? Is it difficult to meet the requirements for studying in Australia? These are common questions that students who are planning to study abroad often ask. Let's answer your questions with IDP
1. Age conditions
Depending on each family's conditions and study plan, students can choose to study abroad in Australia at many different ages. Basically, the minimum age to obtain a student visa for Australia is 6 years old.
For international students under 18 years old but still want to study in Australia, you need to meet the following conditions:
Be accompanied by a legal guardian including the father and mother
Living with blood relatives
Live with a guardian appointed by the school
Have a certificate of accommodation, committing to safety and legality throughout the study period
For international students under 18 years old, you are not allowed to fly to Australia too early, only enter Australia on the date provided on the documents. And if you want to return to Vietnam during the holidays, you need the consent of your guardian and the school you are attending.

2. Academic Requirements
Similar to other countries, the first condition to study abroad in Australia will be based on your academic ability in the last 2 years of study. Regulations on GPA scores will vary between schools and levels of study.
Level of study | Requirements |
|---|---|
Secondary school | Complete at least the last 2 years of the program, submit transcripts or copies of academic records |
Foundation Program | Completed Grade 11 in Vietnam |
University | Completed Grade 12 |
Postgraduate | University graduates |
3. Foreign language proficiency requirements
Each university and college in Australia will have its own requirements for English test scores. However, usually, schools will require you to achieve one of the following international English certificates, but the most common is IELTS.
English language test providers | Minimum test score | Minimum test score if principal course is accompanied with either at least 10 weeks of ELICOS or a Foundation (Standard/Extended) or an eligible Pathway program | Minimum test score if principal course is accompanied with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS |
|---|---|---|---|
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) | 6.0 | 5.5 | 5.0 |
TOEFL iBT | 64 | 46 | 35 |
Cambridge English: Advanced (Certificate in Advanced English) | 169 | 162 | 154 |
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) | 50 | 42 | 36 |
Occupational English Test | B for each test component | B for each test component | B for each test component |
4. Financial Capacity
4.1. Financial proof conditions
Vietnam has officially been upgraded to Assessment Level 2 (AL2) in Australian student visa approval. This is good news for Vietnamese students to reduce the financial proof procedure when applying to Level 1 and Level 2 schools.
However, if you choose Level 3 schools, your application will be considered as a Regular application, so you still need to submit full financial proof.
Proof of financial means is an important step to ensure you can afford tuition fees and living expenses during your studies. Financial documents must be ready and transparent, as the Australian Consulate has the right to refuse a visa if the information is incomplete.
Proof of financial resources for studying in Australia | Detail |
