With the Canadian education system focusing on cutting-edge research, diverse academic programs, and innovative teaching methods, these institutions provide students with a world-class education that equips them for success in their chosen fields.
Apart from being devoted to research and high-quality teaching, Canadian universities also aim to provide opportunities that improve students’ learning, careers, and lives. Classes are a combination of lectures and tutorials that aim to provide students with a global perspective, and the best level of support to ensure their academic success.
International students pursuing a higher education in Canada can rest assured that the Canadian education system is rigorous, supportive, and globally recognised, providing a strong foundation for academic achievement and future career success.
Canada is home to some of the best universities in the world, with renowned institutions such as the University of Toronto, McGill University, and the University of British Columbia, which rank among the top universities worldwide. If you intend to study in Canada, it can be helpful to understand Canada academic intake to better plan for your study journey.
Canada universities generally have three main academic intake periods each year:
This is the primary intake to study in Canada and is the most popular. This means that there will be more applications and it might get highly competitive for your preferred course of study. However, this is also the period where your dream course is more than likely to be available for application. This is also the semester to consider if you wish to embark on internship and job opportunities in Canada after graduation as companies line up their recruitment and attachment programs with this main Fall intake.
If you've missed the Fall intake, the Winter intake is still a decent intake and a good alternative for students to consider. There will be fewer choices available when it comes to available courses and university options. However, competition should be relatively less aggressive than the Fall intake. This option also gives you time to brush up on your application and motivation letter to further improve your chances at this intake.
The Spring intake is a viable option, although you will find the least choices of courses and universities available as fewer courses start in Spring. You may also need to take common modules and subjects instead of your core discipline. You may not get the vibrant student life as this will be the academic holiday season and the campus may be rather empty.
Usually, Singaporean students choose an intake based on a range of factors such as preferred choice of study, the availability of a study program in a particular university, and academic records. So don't let the different intake periods be your only deciding factor. If you are unsure about which semester to choose from, an admission counsellor such as one from IDP can help to walk you through the process to select the most appropriate option for you.
Singaporean students who wish to study in Canada must meet several entry and eligibility requirements depending on their chosen course and level of study.
For undergraduate programs, students who have completed the Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Levels, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, or a polytechnic diploma are generally eligible for direct entry to most Canada universities. Those applying for postgraduate courses in Canada need a relevant bachelor’s degree from a recognised university.
Students will also need to demonstrate English language proficiency through tests such as IELTS, with most courses expecting an IELTS score between 6.0 and 6.5.
The admission process for Singaporean students applying to Canadian universities is straightforward and student-friendly. After researching and shortlisting your preferred university programs and institutions, apply either directly through the university’s online portal or via an authorised education agency such as IDP.
Required documents typically include academic transcripts, English proficiency test results (such as IELTS), a personal statement, and reference letters. Once accepted, the university will issue an official acceptance letter, which is needed to apply for a Canadian study permit. After receiving the permit, you can proceed to arrange travel, accommodation, and pre-departure preparations for your study in Canada.
As a Singaporean student aspiring to move to and study in this sought-after destination, one critical step you cannot overlook is obtaining your Canadian study permit and student visa.
A study permit is NOT a visa. It only permits international students to study in Canada and does not serve as a valid entry document to Canada. In addition to your study permit, you will have to apply for and be granted a visa valid for your stay in Canada which will be either an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) or a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), depending on your home country.
You must make sure your study permit and visa status is correct before you move to Canada for your international studies. You can find out more information such as application fees and deadline by referring to the Canadian immigration authority known as the Immigration, Refugees and Citizen Canada (IRCC). Your IDP counsellor can also help you access the latest study permits and visa information and connect you with authorised migration experts.
Canada may offer one of the lowest tuition rates for international students when compared to other destinations such as UK or USA. However, the cost of studying in Canada will still definitely be more expensive than studying locally in Singapore. It is important for Singaporean students to do their due diligence in budget and cost preparation before moving to Canada.
As a rough estimate, depending on the type of course and university, the average annual tuition fee for undergraduate programs will cost anywhere between CA$12,000 and CA$25,000 per year, and for postgraduate degrees, it can cost between CA$14,000 and CA$35,000 per year.
Typical study expenses for international students also include study permit and visa fees, accommodation costs, health coverage, and study materials. Planning a well-structured budget that accounts for all miscellaneous costs before you depart will help you manage your finances effectively and make the most of your study experience in Canada.
Financing an international education can feel overwhelming for many international students. Fortunately, Canadian universities and colleges offer a variety of scholarships specifically for international students to help support their studies and alleviate their tuition fees.
In addition, numerous scholarships, grants, and bursaries are available from the Canadian government, as well as from public and private organisations. These are usually merit-based, need-based, and country-specific scholarships for international students that recognise academic excellence and leadership potential.
For Singaporean students planning to study in Canada, securing a scholarship can play a key role in making your overseas education both affordable and rewarding. Before applying to any of these Canadian scholarships, do check the eligibility requirements and criteria, along with the closing date.
In addition to tuition fees, it’s important for international students to factor in the general cost of living in Canada. These living expenses include groceries and dining, phone and internet costs, public transportation costs, and entertainment costs. Living costs in Canada can vary significantly depending on the city, with major urban centres like Toronto and Vancouver generally being more expensive, while smaller cities such as Winnipeg or Halifax tend to be more affordable.
For Singaporean students, it can help to compare living expenses in the different cities of Canada with those you are accustomed to in Singapore. This can help you in planning a realistic budget and making an informed decision on where to study as an international student.
One of Canada's most compelling features for international students is its post-graduate work and immigration opportunities. The country recognises the value that international graduates bring to its workforce and society.
Graduates from recognised institutions can apply for Canada's Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)*, a work permit that allows them to gain valuable work experience in Canada after completing their studies. This practical exposure not only enhances their career prospects but also provides a pathway to permanent residency through various immigration programs.
Choosing to study in Canada isn't merely a decision about education, it is also an investment in a bright and promising future with the opportunity to relocate and lead an enriching life. With such a range of benefit, Canada remains a top study destination for international students, including Singaporean students.
*Please note that IDP does not provide post-study work visas for students.
