Reading books has always been my all time favorite activity, and finding a worth-reading book is like discovering a hidden gemstone. Among all the books I have read, Tao Te Ching is the one which has the most special meaning to my life.
This one is a traditionally renowned piece of literature in China which is regarded as “the bag of wisdom”. It was composed by Lao Tzu, a teacher of all teachers in the ancient period. I was first introduced to this book 3 years ago by a close friend of mine who was a bookworm.
The book is about the natural rules which we must comply with in order to achieve a happy and satisfying life. Moreover, there are chapters which educate us in terms of how we should treat people around us. Although the book was written centuries ago, the lessons within are still vivid and applicable to people of the present days, especially youngsters. Every single word is carefully chosen and concise, all of which are arranged in a poetic way so as for people to memorize and understand.
To be frank, I have learned a lot from Tao Te Ching and have applied several things from it to my life, which did wonders for myself. I remember one time when I was confused by all the decisions I had to make, but one sentence from the book which was “Following nature is the only truth” really snapped me out of the confusion and gave me hints to choose correctly.
I have been reading this book over and over again, and each time doing so, I find out another layer of meaning according to my personal life experience. I think I will introduce this one to my friends and family, so they can perceive life from a different angle.
To tell the truth, as opposed to my nerdy appearance, I have never been a book enthusiast. I don’t really experience joy in the process of sitting still and staring at thick pages for hours, thus, I hardly ever read. Nonetheless, there is one book that I actually take pleasure in reading. It is called “Dear girls”, written by the one and only, my favorite stand-up comedian, Ali Wong.
I learned about this book last month through 2 of Ali Wong’s Netflix comedy special hits, “Baby Cobra” and “Hard Knock Wife”. Unfortunately, since Ali did the show when she was pregnant with her second daughter, after the show, she was absent from the stage for a few months. While waiting for her comeback, I decided to give her book a shot. Much as I hate reading, for the love of Ali, I managed to place an order, sit down and spend my time on a 200-page book.
And thankfully, the book lives up to my expectations. “Dear girls” is in fact a well-prepared letter to Ali’s daughters when they get older. It is filled with Ali’s life experience, covering everything a girl needs to know in life. Ali interpreted the world in such a unique way, she gave out her unfiltered thoughts on marriage, Asian culture, working women, and so on. The book was absurdly funny, surprisingly moving, enlightening, and also disgusting as expected from Ali. I believe that this book will be most suitable for people who would enjoy something out of the ordinary or simply have a big laugh.
Even though I haven’t got the time to finish the whole book, I believe it has made reading more pleasant than ever before.
