How to get a Canadian Study PermitWhen it comes to studying abroad in Canada, international students may have heard the terms “Student Visa” and “Study Permit” a few times. However, many students still do not clearly understand the purpose of each type, leading to confusion during the application process. So what is a StudyPermit? How to get a Study Permit in Canada? This article will help you better understand this "passport", as well as the documents you need to prepare to apply for a Study Permit!
1. What is Study Permit in Canada?
A Study Permit is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to international students, allowing them to study at a specific school or educational institution (DLI) in Canada.
Most international students need a Study Permit to be able to enter and complete study procedures in Canada. Therefore, make sure you prepare all the necessary documents before applying. You should apply for a Study Permit before arriving in Canada. However, you do not need a Study Permit in the following cases:
Children attending a preschool program.
People participating in a course lasting less than 6 months (except in some special cases)
People taking a non-academic course, usually a short-term professional training course.

2. Difference between a Canadian student visa and a Study Permit
Student Visa is a document that allows students to enter Canada, but you are not allowed to study in Canada. To study in Canada, you will need a Study Permit with detailed information such as: the reason you came to Canada, what level of education you are studying, and how long your study period in Canada lasts.
In short:
Student Visa – Allows students to enter Canada.
Study Permit – Allows students to stay in Canada to study.
3. Eligibility and Required Documents to Apply for Study Permit
To be eligible to apply for a Canadian Study Permit, students must:
Have an acceptance letter from a school or educational institution listed on the DLI to apply for a Study Permit.
Provide a valid passport or travel document and any accompanying dependents (if applicable). The passport must be valid and allow the student to return to the country that issued it.
Prove that you have enough financial capacity to cover first-year tuition fees, as well as living expenses.
Receive a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) if the student wishes to study in Montreal or elsewhere in Quebec.
The student must be a law-abiding citizen with a clean background, and no criminal record, and not be a threat to Canada's security. IRCC may require applicants to provide criminal records from their home country.
A certificate of good health. IRCC may require applicants to complete a medical examination if necessary.
The student must prove to the immigration officer that they will leave Canada after completing their study period.
4. When to extend your Study Permit
Your Canadian Study Permit expires 90 days after your graduation date, regardless of the date printed on your Study Permit. It is extremely important for any international student to update your status with IRCC within 90 days of graduation, or they risk losing their legal residency status in Canada.
You can apply to extend your Study Permit in Canada in two ways:
Online application
Submit your application directly to the Vegreville, Alberta processing office at least 30 days before expiration.
The basic list of documents you need to prepare to extend your study permit includes an invitation letter for the next course, a Passport, an Old Study Permit, Financial documents (bank statement or savings book), and Forms as required by the Immigration Department.
