1. What is GMAT?

The GMAT (short for Graduate Management Admission Test) is a standardized test widely used globally to assess the prospects of any candidate who wants to pursue the field of Economics, Business, and Management, for a Master's or PhD degree.

In addition to the requirements for learning ability and experience in extracurricular activities, the GMAT is considered the gold standard to evaluate the language skills, information processing ability, and essay writing that you have equipped throughout the learning and training process.

The GMAT certificate is valid for 5 years. The minimum GMAT score required by schools will range between 500-700/800. If you want to attend the top Ivy League schools, the requirement for a GMAT score will be higher, along with other admission requirements such as dissertation, work experience, etc.

2. Why is the GMAT important when studying for an MBA abroad?

The GMAT plays a crucial role in MBA admissions because it helps schools objectively assess the academic abilities and managerial thinking of applicants from diverse educational backgrounds. In a competitive MBA application environment, GMAT scores are a vital basis for admissions committees to compare and select suitable candidates.

The GMAT test focuses on core skills such as analytical thinking, logical reasoning, data processing, and academic writing – abilities essential for in-depth study and discussion within an MBA program.

Furthermore, a GMAT score reflects an applicant's readiness for a high-intensity academic environment and can increase their chances of receiving scholarships or compensate for other shortcomings in their application.

3. What GMAT score is considered good?

GMAT scores are assessed on a scale of 200–800, with scores of 650 and above generally considered good, and 700+ considered excellent and highly competitive when applying for MBA programs.

Specifically:
500–600 points: Average, meeting the entry requirements of some MBA programs.
600–650 points: Fair, suitable for many prestigious business schools.
650–700 points: Good, making the application stand out during the selection process.
700+ points: Excellent, usually in the high-scoring group of test-takers and a significant advantage when applying to top schools or scholarships.

However, the GMAT score is not the only factor determining the admission outcome. MBA schools usually evaluate the overall application, including academic achievements, work experience, personal essay, and letters of recommendation. A suitable GMAT score, combined with a well-prepared application, will significantly increase your chances of admission.
