Australia Study Abroad Checklist: 9+ Things You Should Know

1. Admission and Academic Requirements

Before applying to study in Australia, you need to make sure you meet the following requirements: Requirements to study in Australia and the admission procedure is as follows:

  • Academic documents and qualifications for the last 2 years

  • English Certificates:

    IELTS

    (Secondary 5.0-6.0, Preparatory 5.0- 5.5, Certificate 6.0, Bachelor 6.0 – 6.5, Master's 6.5, PhD 6.5) or other equivalent English certificates

  • Passport (valid for at least 6 months)

  • Certificate of achievement or award (if the student wants to conquer a high scholarship)

2. Application for an Australian student visa (Subclass 500)

A visa is a mandatory document that allows you to study and live in Australia legally. To apply Australian student visa, you need to prepare the following necessary documents:

  • All academic documents (as in the Academic Requirements section)

  • Letter of invitation and acceptance of the school in Australia

  • International Student Health Insurance

  • Documents confirming guardianship and housing as prescribed (if the student is under 18 years old)

  • Meet the requirements for medical examinations and other visa procedures

3. Financial records

4. Choosing accommodation in Australia

Your choice of accommodation will affect your study experience in Australia. Here are some popular forms of renting in Australia for international students:

  • Shared house

  • Homestay

  • Residential college

  • Student Apartment

Experience before choosing accommodation for international students in Australia:

  • Book early

  • Consider the right cost.

  • Choose housing near campus

  • Carefully review the terms of the contract

5. Healthcare and Insurance

The Australian government has strict health and health insurance requirements for international students. Before applying for a visa, you will need to complete the following medical examination documents:

  • Original passport or citizen identity card.

  • The request for a health examination with the HAP ID code.

  • eMedical Referral Letter.

  • The medical examination form has been filled out with complete information and pasted with a photo of the card.

  • Previous medical records (if any).

  • Results of previous X-rays (if any).

Healthcare in Australia:

  • OSHC insurance is mandatory for all international students. You can buy OSHC insurance through IDP's partners such as: Medibank, NIB, Allianz.

  • Find out your nearest doctor, hospital & pharmacy

  • Mental health support services at the University

6. Part-time job opportunities

The Australian government allows international students to work part-time with a limit on the number of hours per week, helping international students earn extra income and gain practical experience. Here is some important information about overtime regulations in Australia

  • International students are allowed to work overtime for a maximum of 48 hours/2 weeks during the semester and unlimited during vacations.

  • The minimum overtime wage is AUD 24.10 per hour.

  • Post your Tax Identification Number (TFN) for part-time work

  • Use LinkedIn, job fairs, or internship programs to expand career opportunities.

7. Adapting to the culture and life in Australia

Australia is one of the countries with a diverse culture and a laid-back lifestyle. To quickly adjust to your new environment, you can learn more about some of the following suggestions:

  • Learn slang and learn Australian culture

  • Affordable supermarkets in Australia: Coles, Woolworths, Aldi

  • Traveling by public transport, take advantage of student discount cards.

  • Apply for an Australian SIM (you can apply via IDP)

  • Join international student groups or the Vietnamese community living in Australia

8. Safety & Legal

When starting your study abroad life in Australia, it is important to understand the legal regulations and pay attention to personal safety issues, specifically as follows:

  • Emergency number (police, ambulance, fire): 000

  • Understand local laws (driving, drinking age, labor rights)

  • Beware of scams and thieves when going out.

9. Financial Management

Proper spending planning and financial management will help you avoid budget deficits. Here are some tips for effective financial management:

10. Things to keep in mind before you fly

Finally, before arriving in Australia, thorough preparation is an important factor to help you avoid unnecessary trouble. Make sure you have the following factors in place:

  • Bring some cash with you

  • Check thoroughly to make sure you have all the necessary documents

  • Bring appropriate luggage and personal belongings

  • Install the necessary applications (banking, contacts)

  • Join international student groups for more information and support.
